Scottish Attainment Challenge and Pupil Equity Fund

Calderside Academy is one of many schools in Scotland eligible to receive funding through the Scottish Government.

The Scottish Attainment Challenge is about achieving equity in education. This can be achieved by ensuring every child has the same opportunity to succeed, with a particular focus on closing the poverty-related attainment gap.

The Scottish Attainment Challenge was launched by the First Minister in February 2015. It is underpinned by The National Improvement Framework, Curriculum for Excellence and Getting It Right for Every Child. It supports three of the four National Improvement priorities, which are:

  • Improvement in attainment, particularly in literacy and numeracy
  • Closing the attainment gap between the most and least disadvantaged children;
  • Improvement in children and young people’s health and wellbeing

It will also support and complement the broader range of initiatives and programmes to ensure that all of Scotland’s children and young people reach their full potential.

The Pupil Equity Fund is underpinned by The Scottish Attainment challenge and 95% of schools in Scotland have been allocated funding for pupils in P1-S3 known to be eligible for free school meals. This funding is to be spent at the discretion of the head-teacher working in partnership with each other and their local authority.

Through The Scottish Attainment Challenge and The Pupil Equity Fund, Calderside Academy has been able to support all pupils to ensure access a number of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities aimed at improving literacy, numeracy or health and wellbeing. 

Initiatives supported through The Scottish Attainment Challenge and Pupil Equity Fund have included:

  • Easter School for S4-6
  • Extensive Supported Study programme for S4-S6
  • Calderside’s Amazing Academy: A P7 transition event involving S1 and S6
  • Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme
  • Increased access to ICT in Humanities and ASN for all pupils
  • Additional support in English and Maths 
  • Additional funding to ensure equal access to extra-curricular opportunities
